A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the overstated age of eighteen in Washington DC October 12, 1861, and mustered into federal service there October 27 as a private with Co. D, 11th Pennsylvania Cavalry (108th Pennsylvania). He re-enlisted at an unrecorded age as a Veteran Volunteer November 2, 1863, at Portsmouth, Virginia, and re-mustered there November 10. Captured at the battle of Ream's Station, Virginia, on June 29, 1864, he was ultimately incarcerated in the stockade at Andersonville, Georgia. Data on his parole requires additional research, but typically he would have been forwarded to Camp Parole in Annapolis, Maryland, and furloughed for a minimum of thirty days. He honorably discharged per general order to date June 8, 1865.
In 1905, he attended that Pennsylvania memorial ceremony at Andersonville, his transpiration costs- and other Pennsylvanians who had been held prisoner there - was provided by the state of Pennsylvania. He died at the stated age of 68-5-3 from "chronic Bright's disease - disease of both kidneys." He had been a member of Housum Post No. 309, G.A.R.
