Martha Ann Black, 81, of Indianapolis, passed away at 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 9, 2020, at her residence.

Born April 14, 1938, in Vernon, she was the daughter of the late Haskill and Lethia (Hill) Cartwright. She married David Black on July 30, 1960, at the North Vernon Presbyterian Church; he survives.

Martha was a 1956 graduate of Vernon High School and a 1959 graduate of Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio where she earned her R.N. Degree. She worked as a Registered Nurse for a private family practice before retiring. Martha was a member of Southeast Baptist Tabernacle Church in Indianapolis and enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, cross stitch, traveling, reading to folks in the nursing home and spending time with her family.

Surviving with her husband of 59 years are, sons, David (Angie) Black of Moberly, Missouri and Gregory (Dawn) Black of Cumberland, Ohio; daughters, Geri (Paul) Briggs of Lafayette, and Lori (Mike) Roberts of Indianapolis; brothers, Vernon Cartwright, Charlie (Judy) Cartwright, Tom (Susan) Cartwright, and Haskil (Marty) Cartwright, all of North Vernon; sisters, Janice (Tony) Lanham, Mary (Buzzard) Ezzo, and Vivian (Gayle) Jines, all of North Vernon; grandchildren, Jameson (Corina) Briggs, Evan (Becky) Briggs and Erika Briggs, all of Lafayette, Zachary (Elizabeth) Briggs of Cincinnati, Ohio, Carlie Black of Kansas City, Missouri, Addison Black of Columbia, Missouri, Jared Dettra and Lukas Black both of Cumberland, Ohio, Sharayah (Marco) Lopresti of New Philadelphia, Ohio, and Andrew Dettra of Byesville, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Alexis, Braxton, Aria, Anniston, Emeryn and EJ Briggs all of Layayette, Annabelle Dettra of Stowe, Ohio, Johnny, Dixon and Vivian Lopresti all of New Philadelphia, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters, Margaret Jackson, Ida Clerkin and Lois Robinson.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 13, 2020, at the Vernon Baptist Church in Vernon with Paul Briggs and Rev. John Ray officiating. Family and friends may call at the Vernon Baptist Church on Monday, January 13, 2020, from 12:00 p.m. (noon) until the time of the service. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery. Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon were entrusted with the care of these arrangements.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home for expenses.
