Big Stone Gap, Va.-Ted Wayne Thompson, 70, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2020. He was born May 19, 1949 at Osaka, Va.

Ted graduated from Appalachia High School in 1968 and attended Milligan College in Milligan, Tn., earning a BS in Psychology. He received his Master’s Degree in Counseling from Radford University. Ted spent most of his life in service to the students of Wise County. He retired after 32 years as a teacher, counselor and 22 years as a school bus driver at Appalachia Elementary School. After retirement, Ted spent nearly two years working the Wise Choice Program through Wise County and as a counselor at the Alternative Education School in Wise. Ted was elected to the Wise County School Board, serving as chairperson for three of the four years. Ted was proud to have served during the difficult time of school consolidation of the county high schools. After his tenure, he served the students as an employee of Family Preservation Services and later as an employee of Health Connect America.

Ted was preceded in death by his dear wife, Linda, after 45 short years of marriage; by his father and mother, Raymond and Nannie (Frazier) Thompson; three brothers, Elmer “Buster” Thompson, Herbert Thompson and Ronnie Thompson and four sisters, Kathleen Hunter, Vivian Nick, Betty Raleigh and Virginia “Jenny” Bailey.

Ted is survived by two daughters, Michelle Dean (John) and Nicole Whitt (Richard); seven grandchildren, Rachel Thompson (Brandon Cvengros), Ty Dean, Morgan Dean, Skyler Dean, Dalton Lawson, Lyla Lawson and Benjamin Whitt; two sisters, Louise Shuler and Dorothy Field (Keith); one brother, Fred Thompson (Barbara) and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 11, 2020 from 4pm to 6pm at Gilliam Funeral Home, 618 Wood Ave., W., Big Stone Gap. A memorial service will follow at 6pm with Pastor Phillip Bates officiating. Music will be provided by Tim Cooper.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Central High School, 5000 Warrior Drive, Norton, Va. 24273, for the Ted Thompson Fund. This fund will aid the children with specific needs with whom he worked.
