Raymond Fernandez and his female partner in crime, Martha Beck, were notorious serial killers that were executed together for their large crime spree. Labeled as the Lonely Hearts Killers, creating a large nation-wide manhunt. Raymond Fernandez was born of spanish parents in Hawaii, at the age of 3, moved with his family to Bridgeport, Conneticut, as a teenager, went to work on his Uncles farm in Spain. At the age of 20, he married a local woman in Spain, named Encarnacion Robles, they had 4 kids together. He later abandoned his family and returned to the United States. He bought passage on another ship headed to Alabama, when the boat arrived at the Mobile Port, he stole a large quanity of clothing and items from the ship's storeroom that was clearly marked. When he tried passing through customs, he was arrested. He was sentenced to one year at the Federal Penitentiary in Tallahassee, Florida. While in prison there, his cellmate was a Haitian man, a follower of the ancient religeon, Vodun, a form of voodoo. Which he quickly involved Raymond in. Weak-minded Raymond soon felt he had a secret power over women and increased his sexual powers. In 1946 he was released from prison and moved to Brooklyn, New York to live with his sister. He began to write to alot of lonely women he met through Lonely Hearts Clubs, he seduced dozens of gullible women, after gaining their trust. He would use them and steal from them...money, checks, jewelery, anything of value. He embezzled and swindled for a living. He met one woman, who was a nurse, but lost her job. After a few letters, they decided to meet. They moved in together. He met his match in Martha (Seabrook) Beck. She was a very heavy-set and a plain looking woman, rather homely. He originally thought she had money, she had nothing but a heavy heart, looking for love. Looks to him didn't matter. She was lonely and had few opportunities for romance. She met a Naval Officer in California, they shared one child together, a daughter named Willa Dean. The soldier wanted nothing to do with Martha or the child, even tried committing suicide, learning she was pregnant, by throwing himself into the San Francisco Bay. He survived and disappeared from her life. She had the child in 1944, but Raymond wanted nothing to do with children, so she abandoned the child at the Salvation Army when the child was 3. She chose Raymond over her own child. Raymond eventually confided in Martha what he did for a living, she'd do anything to hang onto her man, so she became intrigued and entangled in his scams. Before long, it just wasn't plain robbing vulnerable women, it involved rape and murder afterwords, fullfilling their sexual fantasies. Some women were tortured and mutilated. They were eventually captured and convicted, both sentenced to death. His last meal was: An Onion Omelet, French Fries, Chocolate Candy, and a Cuban Cigar. His last words were: "I want to shout it out. I Love Martha! What does the public know about love?" Unknown to Martha, his ex-wife from Spain was staying in touch with him on Death Row, offering moral support along with her love letters. The once debonair lady-killer (No pun intended), very macho and strong, had to be carried to the death chamber, paralyzed in fear. He was electrocuted in the Electric Chair first, before Martha, dying at the age of 36.
