Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company magnate. Born in St. Louis, John Edmund Liggett was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Foulks). At the age of eighteen, he entered the employ of Foulks & Shaw, tobacco manufacturers, the members of this firm being his maternal grandfather, Christopher Foulks, and stepfather, Hiram Shaw. About the time he attained his majority, his grandfather retired from the firm and the business became known as Hiram Shaw & Co. It would later be known as J.E. Liggett & Bro., Liggett & Dausman, and eventually was incorporated as the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Manufacturing Company in 1873. As president of the company, John greatly shaped and influenced the tobacco market and was considered a pleasant and encouraging employer to those who numbered at times more than a thousand. He was married in St. Louis on December 21, 1851, to Elizabeth J. Calbreath of Callaway Co., Missouri and they became the parents of Dolly L., Hiram Shaw, Cora and Ella Liggett. A man of great wealth, John Liggett was known to have remained the same plain, matter-of-fact man. At the time of his death, his estate was one of the largest ever accumulated by a citizen of St. Louis, being valued in the millions.
