Clara Gilliland Carroll, of Knoxville, died on January 4, 2020 from complications after a fall.
Clara was a friendly, outgoing person with a dramatic flair. Clara loved decorating, shopping and giving gifts. She was an avid gardener and adored flowers of all kinds. She was a strong and vocal Democrat. Clara (Momo) will be missed and lovingly remembered by her family, friends and her much loved cats, Willlie and Simon.
Clara was born in Roane County on February 11,1931. Her parents were John and Hazel Gilliland of Harriman. She attended Harriman High School and was a graduate of Tennessee Technological University where she was voted into Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities in her Junior year. Clara was a successful realtor for 20 years and after retiring dealt in antiques for several years.
Clara was married to Robert Leonard Carroll, now deceased, who is the father of her children. She was later married to William Clarence Pearson.
Her children, all of whom survive her are, Robert Leonard Carroll, Jr. of Panama City, FL, Alice Jane Carroll (Keith Brown) and Julia Leone Carroll, both of Knoxville and Ann Gilliland Carroll, of Tybee Island, GA. Her grandchildren are Charles Robert Kress (Hannah), Katy Carroll Smith, Nicholas Cosmo Patton, all of Knoxville, Emma Grace Hendrix of Panama City, FL, Shayna Ortt (Nathan) of Gates,
OR, and great grandchildren Levi Ortt, Nolan Ortt, and Aubrey Jane Ortt of Gates, OR. Clara is also survived by her sister, Edna Frances (EF) Holmes of Saratoga Springs, NY and her brother, John William Gilliland of Saratoga Springs, NY and was preceded in death by her sister, Eleanor Joyce Zinck. She is survived by nieces Elizabeth Leone Holmes, NH, Melissa Holmes Hatch, NY, Cynthia Anna Gilliland, VT and Jennifer Holmes Berger, NY. She was preceded in death by her nephew, Earl Rudolph (Randy) Bennett, Jr. of Oak Ridge, TN.
Clara’s ashes will be buried privately in her family plot in the Harriman Cemetery. A very special thank you to those who cared for her recently at Shannondale Rehabilitation Center and the sweet staff at Deane Hill Place Assisted Living.
