La Grange-Bobby Holton Harrison, 85, received his greatest promotion on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 when he was called home to his Heavenly Father and was reunited with his beloved Mary Margaret. Holton was born February 20, 1934 to the late Titus Greene Harrison and Ruth Leneave Harrison. Holton was preceded in death by his beloved wife of fifty-eight years, Mary Margaret Kelly Harrison; and his daughter, Margaret Elizabeth Harrison Loos.

Holton loved his wife more than life itself. In Holton’s eyes, the sun, moon, and stars rose and set upon his precious Mary Margaret. He fell in love with her the first time he laid eyes on her. It didn’t take long before he worshiped the very ground she walked upon. For Holton, Mary Margaret was truly his happily ever after. The two wed after a courtship and, together, raised their greatest blessings, Nathan and Margaret Elizabeth. With their boy and girl, their family was complete.

Both Holton and Mary Margaret served the children and families in their community for many years as they built careers in the public education system. Holton was dedicated to the field of education and was the principal that teachers loved to work for. Though he was structured and believed in discipline and hard work, Holton always supported his teachers and made sure they and their students had all they needed to succeed.

A pillar of the community, Holton was involved in everything from the establishment of the La Grange Arts Council to the La Grange Rotary Club. He believed wholeheartedly in the Rotary Four Way Test and it became daily practice for him. He aimed to ensure that all he did was in truth, fairness, and goodwill, and beneficial to others. Holton was a strong supporter and advocate of Gideon’s International and their mission to share the gospel of Christ across the world. He was an active member of Community Baptist Church. In whatever Holton was involved in, you could usually expect that he would be a few minutes late. It was, after all, the Harrison way.

Never one to be idle, Holton used his quiet time to go fishing or tend to his honeybees. He especially loved his garden and could spend hours outside with his hands in the soil. Holton and Mary Margaret spent much time outdoors, especially during their summer trips to Maine.

Of all of Holton’s characteristics, perhaps one of his best was his smile. When Holton would tilt his head and cock a grin, the whole room would light up. His kind eyes spoke kindness and compassion to everyone he met. Holton’s eyes were brightest, though, when he spoke of Mary Margaret. Holton loved his family more than anything, and was a proud and doting father and grandfather. His legacy and example is permanently imprinted in the hearts of family and friends.

A service to celebrate Holton’s life will be Friday, January 10, 2020 at 11 a.m. from Rouse Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Holton is survived by his son, Nathan Harrison and his companion, Sue Creech; two granddaughters, Mary Lauren Harrison and Scarlette Eve Harrison and spouse, Amber; three great-grandchildren, Ethan Michael Gray, Jaxson David Harrison and Imani Marie Harrison; three siblings, Joseph Harrison and wife, Ellen, Clifton Harrison and wife, Joyce, and Donnie Harrison and wife, Lucille.

Holton was also preceded in death by eight siblings, Enzie Singleton, Elvie Ruth Holland, Maxie Harrison, Cleo Harrison, Holton Hillard Harrison, Dixon Harrison, Titus Harrison, and Kendrick Harrison.

Family and friends will be received Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home.
