Harry enlisted for service during World War One first with the 44th Battalion on May 03, 1915, regimental number A22852. He was discharged from the 44th on July 13, 1915 at Camp Hughes, Manitoba. He re-enlisted with the 101st (Winnipeg Light Infantry) Battalion on January 28, 1916 at Winnipeg, regimental number 700996. He served overseas with the 16th (Canadian Scottish) Battalion. He was reported Missing in Action after an attack on Regina Trench, near Courcelette, France on October 08/09. 1916, and later reported to be a prisoner of war. He was repatriated to England in November, 1918. Harry was demobilized at London, England on April 10, 1919, with the stated intention of living in Ireland. By 1922, though, he had returned to Canada, settling near Estevan, Saskatchewan.
