Mrs. Mildred Adkins, 80, of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, died on Monday, May 4, 2015. She was born on December 28, 1934 to the late Millard and Laura Jones Webb in Northampton County, North Carolina where she attended school.
She later moved to Roanoke Rapids where she attended John Armstrong Chaloner School and met the love of her life in George Melvin Adkins. From this union, seven children were born. One child, Sharon Shenita, preceded her in death.
Mildred gave her life to Christ at an early age and was under the tutelage of the late Mother Jones and Mother Graham when Pastor Bishop Jay C. Kelly came to Roanoke Rapids. She then joined with him and became a member of Lighthouse of Deliverance where she was Church Secretary, Treasurer, and a choir member. She diligently sold hot dogs, white powered doughnuts and sweet potato jacks to help with the church building fund of Lighthouse. Later, she became Mother of the church. Mother Adkins loved the Lord, her pastor, and her church family. Her testimony was "I wouldnt take nothing for this journey". Those of us who witnessed her testimony are most certain this is what she would say today. Her journey here on earth has ended and her journey on the streets of gold has begun. In addition to her parents,
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband: George Melvin Adkins; siblings: James, Leroy, Joe Lewis Webb and Sarah Hendricks. Treasured memories of her life will remain with her family and children: George Jerome Adkins, Sr. (Cathy) and Toni L. Adkins (Glendora) of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Cynthia D. Adkins (Wyman) of Miami, FL, Dorinda Adkins and Corliss Adkins (Jacqueline) of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Tona Renee Adkins of Durham, NC; 18 grandchildren; George Jerome Adkins, Jr., "JJ", Zenovia Jackson, Artez, Lisa, Danita, and Cody Adkins, Orenthal and Cynkethia Anthony, Shawn and Lakenda Perry, Corliss, Jr., Cory, Sadarryle and Isaiah Adkins, Jasmine Jackson, Abigi Shabazz, Marcus Peterson and Regana Powers; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; her siblings: Lucille Moody of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Emma Clark of Siler City, NC, and Alvis Webb, Sr. (Odessa) of Douglasville, GA; in-laws: Anna L. Williams of Bronx, NY, Howard Adkins (Elenora) of Bronx, NY, Lillie T. Adkins of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Evelyn Adkins of Bronx, NY; three special friends: Bessie Davis, Mattie Whitaker, and Bertha Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, church family, and friends.
