Rev. John P. Hoover, age 92, of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, passed away on Monday, January 6, 2020 at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. John was born on October 25, 1927 in Columbus, Ohio to Alston and Phoebe (Miller) Hoover, both of whom are deceased. He married Evelyn A. Riegel on June 18, 1949 in the Mt. Carmel E.U.B. Church in rural Bellevue, Ohio, and she passed away on October 9, 2014.

He is also survived by 6 children, Larry Hoover of Findlay, Ohio, Stephen (Diana) Hoover of Upper Sandusky, Thomas (Gretchen) Hoover of Galloway, Ohio, Kathleen (William) Sumner of San Antonio, Texas, Linda (Michael) Barth of Upper Sandusky, and Peggy (Dean) England of Upper Sandusky. Along with 17 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren, and a brother Herbert (Wanda) Hoover of Phoenix, Arizona. John was preceded in death by his 2 brothers, Abe and Lowell, and 2 sisters, Margaret Hull and Janet Casey, and a daughter in law, Jane Hoover.

He was a 1945 graduate of Orange Township High School, served in the U.S. Army, and went on to graduate from Otterbein College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. He then continued his education for ministry at the Winebrenner Theological Seminary, receiving his Master of Divinity. John then pastored the following churches: Green Springs E.U.B., Salem E.U.B. & Belle Vernon E.U.B., Hoytville E.U.B., Trinity United Methodist Church in Upper Sandusky, and Delphos Trinity United Methodist Church. His 41 years of ministry also included some interim pastoral positions after his retirement. For hobbies John enjoyed fishing, camping, following the Ohio State Buckeyes, and Cleveland Indians, softball, bowling, and playing dartball with the various churches he was pastoring. His greatest love was his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Service for Rev. John Hoover will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, January 12, 2020 at Trinity Evangelical United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jim Stauffer and Rev. Thomas Hoover officiating. Visitations will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2020, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the John Stewart United Methodist Church in Upper Sandusky. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to John Stewart U.M.C. or Trinity Evangelical U.M.C., The Gideons, or a Charity of the donor’s choice. Memorials can be sent to Lucas-Batton Funeral Home, 476 S. Sandusky Ave. Upper Sandusky, Ohio, 43351.
