Russell Lee Berry, 81, of Manns Harbor, N.C. passed away peacefully on January 2, 2020 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after a short illness. Born in Hyde County N.C. on May 9, 1938, he was the son of the late Cecil Lee Berry and Mabel Ruth Watson Berry.

Russell always lived a very unique life. Some have said that he was born 100 years too late. After graduating from Manteo High School, he made his living as a very skilled mechanic and commercial fisherman, but his passion in life was deer hunting and collecting driftwood from the waters of Eastern North Carolina to sell to various merchants all over the state. He was known locally as “The Driftwood Man”.

Russell is survived by a brother, Stafford Berry (Jean) of Wanchese, N.C. and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Carroll Berry, Ray Berry and Jimmy Berry along with sisters Gladys Wilson, Linda Pentecost and Nancy Ann Berry.

A memorial service is planned for Sunday, January 19, 2020 at 2:00 PM at the Roanoke Acres Church of Christ located at 1104 US Hwy 64/264 Manteo, N.C.
