Isabel was the twin sister of Julia Katharine Rosalind Du Cane. Issie could speak German, French and English and was an accomplished pianist. She never married. She died at the Royal West Sussex Hospital in Chichester, West Sussex, England.
Isabel was an early friend of pianist/composer Percy Aldridge Grainger and his mother Rose. See the book Fartherest North of Humanness with copies of his letters to her dated 1901-1914. She scored music for him. The Du Cane’s hosted him at Ballards, Goudhurst, Kent in 1912. He wrote on Oct 12, 1912 to Karen Holten in Danish, “So we went away, had a pleasant journey and said ‘yes’ to Miss Du Cane’s invitation to have us here in the country. Du Cane’s are 4 old maids, kind and pleasant; you probably know one of them. It is charming here, we have played tennis every day and it is warm and moist and green and at the same time peaceful and full of life; everything that it wasn’t in Berlin. Dogs bark in a friendly way, and cocks crow fresh and stridently in the air. We have had a very happy little holiday here but travel to London today. (The four old maids in 1912 would probably be Enid Cornelia aka Nela, Mary Virginia aka Daisy, Julia & Isabel).
At the age of 46 years, Isabel travelled to North America arriving on 17 October 1921 at Ellis Island, New York. Her arrival contact person was listed as Percy Grainger, a friend. Her destination was 7 Cromwell Place, White Plains, New York, the home of Rose and Percy Grainger.
