In his graduating class of 1955, Jim had the highest-grade point average of the men in his class. He continued his education at Grayson Jr. College with a Mid-Management Certificate. Later he pursued his love of history and government at Kilgore Jr. College. After his retirement from Sears, he worked to achieve a Real Estate License and worked for Rainbow Realty of Kilgore, Texas.

Beginning his career of Retail Sales Jimmie, began work for Trav Currin Men's Store of Bonham, Texas. After several years working for Mr. Currin, Jimmy began his lifetime love of working as an employee, merchandise manager, and manger. Jim also was the manager of a Sears Satellite Store in Denison, Texas; from there he moved back to the Sherman store and was transferred back to the new store opening in Longview, Texas. He was transferred as the hardline merchandise manager and helped open the new store.

Jim continued to work in various positions and as manager until 1994 when he took the ERIP program with 150,000 other Sears's managers. He retired in 1995 with 29 years at Sears.

Jim was also a member of the Armored Division of Bonham National Guard. During the Berlin crisis his unit was called to active duty at Ft. Polk, LA. He was a member of this unit for 12 years, before retiring as a staff sergeant.

September 1958 Jimmy married Lyndia Donaldson of Mulberry Community. In September of 2019 they celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.

Jimmy was of the Baptist faith, joying the congregation of the Duplex Baptist as a small child. He and his wife Lyndia attended Mulberry Methodist Church, Ravenna Methodist Church and became members of the Ravenna Baptist Church. While living at Liberty City they joined the Liberty Baptist Church. Jimmy served in many roles in this church, as song leader, teacher of the young adults and adult class teacher. He lived his religion daily wherever he was needed to serve. For example, when his father-in-law fell ill from muscular dystrophy disease Jimmy took over the care and upkeep of his ranch and cattle expecting no salary for his work. He was taught as a young child by his father to always help anyone who could not help themselves.
