Carol Jean Hess, 81, Bedford, formerly of Roaring Spring and New Enterprise, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday at Donahoe Manor, Bedford, after an extended illness.

She was born in New Enterprise, daughter of the late Charles A. and V. Romaine (Replogle) Baker. On July 25, 1957, she married the love of her life, R. Merl Hess, in Winchester, Va. He preceded her in death on Dec. 11, 1998.

Surviving are four daughters: Debra M. Holland (Barney) of Bedford, Michelle L. Krider of Roaring Spring, Beth A. Dellinger (Allan) of Martinsburg and Pamela S. Hess of Claysburg; 10 grandchildren: Jennifer D. Cherry, Brandy L. Locke, Ryan J. Patterson, Crystal L. Wilson, Jeffery J. Patterson, Amanda L. Gonsman, Benjamin A. Krider, Keith D. Dellinger, Nicole L. Barlow and Collin A. Hess; three stepgrandchildren: Shanda P. Novak, Stacey R. Heikkila and Darrin W. Wilson; 19 great-grandchildren; two brothers: C. William (Rita) of New Enterprise and Robert E. (Ann) of York; and four sisters: Donna M. Myers (Glen) of Bedford, Betty L. Baker of New Enterprise, Belva L. Slagenweit (Paul) of Everett and Linda K. Lamb in Michigan.

Carol was a 1956 graduate of Replogle High School, New Enterprise. She graduated with a secretarial degree from the Altoona School of Commerce and worked as the office manager for her husband’s insurance and investment business for many years. She also was the choir director for several churches in the area, including the Trinity United Methodist Church and the First Church of the Brethren, both of Roaring Spring, and the Memorial Church of the Brethren in Martinsburg. She and her husband sang in the group, Foundation, with Doug and Jo Ellen Mingle for several years, with all proceeds going to raise money for the local Habitat for Humanity organization. She also coordinated the family singing group, The Hess Family, which did concerts for various churches and public events in the 1960s and ’70s. She previously worked as a sales consultant at Furniture Galleries, Roaring Spring, and taught piano lessons to many students over the years.

Carol was a member of New Enterprise Church of the Brethren, where she helped lead the worship music.

She loved spending time with her family and created beautiful oil paintings that decorated Donahoe Manor during the past eight years.

Friends will be received from 2 until the 4 p.m. Celebration of Life service Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Roaring Spring, Doug Mingle officiating.

Contributions in Carol’s memory may be given to Habitat for Humanity, 322 West Lamar St., Americus, GA 31709-3543.
