Mary "Ethel" Weber Howland was born in Allegheny City in 1890 in an area of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was the youngest daughter of George Weber and Mary Matilda "Tillie" Snaman Weber. She is also the younger sister to Elizabeth Sanman Weber Jay, and Frances "Lois" Weber Smalley, the first female movie director in the US.
Ethel lived with her parents at least through 1910 where she worked a Stenographer to help support her parents. She joined her sister in Hollywood California and married Louis Howland, a studio manager. In the summer of 1921, about the age of 30, she traveled abroad through Europe with her husband. Ethel's husband, Louis, preceded her in death in 1931 at the age of 45.
Ethel also worked as secretary for Lois Weber and worked as an extra in several of the films her sister produced during the silent film era. She was a bit eccentric as she grew older. Her last years she ventured out very little. It is believed that she obtained the bibliography written by her famous sister, Lois Weber, however it was never found at the time of her death. She passed away in Los Angeles, California. She did not have children.-Her Great Grand Niece, Beverly Hickman Atkins
