Russell grew up in southwest Iowa and graduated from Fremont-Mills High School in 1965. Following high school, he served his country in the United States Navy. He later went to work for Eaton Corporation in Shenandoah and worked as a machinist for over 30 years. He was a member of the Hit N Miss Archery Club and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Evelyn Schenck. Survivors include his wife, Pam Hickey of Shenandoah, Iowa; his children, Russell Damon Hickey of Plattsmouth, Nebraska, Julie Renee Glasgo and her husband Brad of Essex, Iowa, Waylon Dean Potts of Shenandoah, Iowa, William Hickey of Shenandoah, Iowa; grandchildren, Alysa, Devon and Chase Hickey, Jasmine, Gunnar and Desiree Glasgo, Kylonna Sands, Braydin and Miley Potts, Peyton, Takara and Justice Nelson; a brother, Ronald and his wife Teresa of Council Bluffs, Iowa; a sister, Carol of Nebraska; along with many other relatives and friends.
