Daniel was born on March 19th, 1926 to F. Earle Hunt and Addie Breedlove in Oxford, NC. After graduating from Oxford High School, he joined the Navy rising to the rank of Pharmacist Mate 2C. After his discharge from the Navy he earned a Bachelor’s Degree from East Carolina University. He then went on to The Ohio State University earning a Masters degree in parasitology.
After graduation, he worked for the State Health Department lab in Easton, Maryland eventually directing two labs on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
In 1964, he received a commission in the Public Health Service where he worked in Oxford, MD, Quonset Point, RI, Cincinnati, OH, and concluded his career in Washington, DC as a Captain. During his tenure with the USPHS he traveled extensively in the service of his country, including trips to Chile, Rome, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, France, England, Mexico, and many trips to Korea.
In 1950, he met the love of his life, Jean Brownley. They were married in 1951 and enjoyed 68 years together going on to have 5 children, Andy (Patty), Laurie (John), Chris (deceased), Brett (Eileen), and Tim (Sue), 16 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. Together Dan and Jean purchased a vacation home on Brier Island, Nova Scotia and enjoyed many wonderful summers there.
After retiring in 1982, Dan purchased his grandfathers farm in Wilton and built a home. He was a founding member of the Lord Granville Agricultural Heritage Association. He was also an active member of Banks United Methodist Church and The American Legion. He was a devoted husband and loyal friend. He loved puttering around the farm, drama, singing and story telling. He will be sorely missed by family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at Banks United Methodist Church By Rev. Mark Gustofson and Andy Hunt. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30 – 10:45 AM prior to the service at Banks United Methodist Church and at other times at the home.
