Mr. Richard Taylor Smith, 40, died suddenly Saturday morning (July 21, 2007) in Houston, Texas.
He was a native of Pensacola, FL but he lived most of his life in Waycross before making his home in Houston, TX six years ago. As a professional golfer, he played on the PGA Tour for 2 years and the Nationwide Tour for 5 years. He was the founder and owner of Astoria Golf Shirt Company, and was currently an employee of Houston Country Club and Lochinvar Golf Club. He was also a member of First United Methodist Church in Waycross.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Cheryl Layton Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Shelly K. Smith of Katy TX; two daughters, Patreece Smith and Layton Smith both of St. Louis, MO; his father, Johnny "J. L." Smith (wife Debbie) of St. Augustine, FL; two brothers, John L. Smith (wife Robin) of Statesboro, and Hank Smith (wife Bonni) of St. Simon's Island; his grandmother, Nancy Layton of Jacksonville, FL; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday (July 27, 2007) at First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday at Music Funeral Home.
