Martha (Shull) Carter, was born September 16, 1929 in Lincoln County, Tennessee to Willie Matt and Callie Shull. She peacefully went home to glory on Monday, December, 30th 2019 in Dayton, Ohio.
Martha was retired from her former employer, GM’s Delco Moraine division where she worked from December 1965 – October 1996. Martha enjoyed traveling home to her roots of Fayetteville, Tennessee where she would spend many months and would then return to her home in Dayton, Ohio just prior to the end of tax season. Soon after handling her taxes, she would immediately start gearing up for her next trip to Fayetteville as early as the 4th of July.
She loved her pawed companions, dogs and cared for many over her lifetime. Martha was an avid Gardener which was not limited to flowers but a variety of fruits and vegetables as well. Martha could “throw down” in the kitchen. She fulfilled many requests from her co-workers and friends, mainly oversized rum soaked muffins. She was also infamous and well known to put her foot in all of her meals. While Martha was full of laughs and life, she also was known for many crafty sayings and had a very head strong personality. She chose not to hold her tongue when you thought that she probably would. All that knew her, would completely understand that statement. Some of Martha’s charitable organizations that she supported are listed as follows: American Heart Association, Boys Town, March of Dimes, Shriners Hospital and St. Jude Hospital.
She was a faithful true tithing member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Dayton, under the late Reverend Morris Smyth where she served on the Usher Board, actively attended church services, Sunday school, bible study and many prayer meetings during her prime. As her health and ability limited her mobility, she moved her membership under Reverend Gregory Pooler as he accommodated her requests for in home visits. Martha spent a lot of time reading from her spiritual library, watching mainstream news coverage but liked most the endless visits by her loved ones.
Preceded in death by her husband of over 30 years, Joe Lincoln Carter; her only son, Darnell Talley; granddaughter, Robyn R. Talley; four sisters Evelyn Shull, Rose McKinney, Annie Lou Shull Logan, Mary Carolyn Lay; two brothers, William Drake Shull and Lynn Shull.
