Charlotte W. Hendrix, 89, of Greenwood, Indiana passed away January 2, 2020. She was born March 24, 1930 in Morgantown, Kentucky to Euen and Elsie (Lamastus) Basham.

When Charlotte was young, she had to leave school after the 8th grade in order to help her family. Although she never finished high school, she went on to earn a certification in nursing in 1958. She was a single mother of three boys, John, Chenault and Russell. She worked two jobs in order to keep a roof over their heads and food in their bellies. Charlotte never stopped learning. She went on to earn many certificates in specialized fields in nursing. Even after she retired, she went to school to learn how to be a hospice nurse. Charlotte had a servant’s heart and wanted nothing more than to help people.

In 1984, after the boys had all finished high school, Charlotte married Jimmy Hendrix and they were together for 32 years until his passing in 2016. In her spare time, she loved to quilt and do needlepoint. The kids remember her amazing vegetable gardens and all of the canning and freezing she would do at harvest time. She loved to bird watch and had an affinity for geese; she loved to collect them and had a stone goose in her front yard she would dress up as the seasons called for it. Then there was her cooking. Growing up in Kentucky, she learned how to cook like a good country girl. She was famous for her chicken and dumplings and liver and onions, among other things. Charlotte always made sure you had something to eat when you came to visit.

Most of all, Charlotte loved people. She loved caring for them. And she loved her family. They all meant the world to her and she cherished the time she was able to spend with them. Charlotte was an amazing soul and her presence on this earth will be greatly missed.

Charlotte is survived by siblings, Deacon E. Basham, Exie Miller, Elizabeth Maynard, OJ Basham and Loretta Elliott; children, Johnny Ray (Cindy) Holt, Chenault (Angie) Holt, and Russell (Kathy) Cassady; grandchildren, Lisa Holt, John Holt, Jonathan Holt, Nicholas Holt, Tiffany Beenken and Eric Workman; great-grandchildren, Austin Holt, Brady Sample, Alex Holt and Lily Beenken. In addition to her parents, Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Hendrix.

Family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. January 6, 2020 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home - 1977 South State Road 135, Greenwood, where services will be at 11:00 a.m.
