KINGSPORT - Joyce left this life and walked into the loving arms of her Savior on January 1, 2020.
She was 91 years old. Joyce resided at the Brookdale Senior Living Center of Colonial Heights. She was born July 20, 1928 in Wise County, VA to George Erwin and Hattie Marie Gardner. Joyce was dedicated to her church (Fordtown Baptist), had a beautiful alto voice and sang in the choir for thirty years. She loved everyone and in return was dearly loved by all who knew her.
Joyce married Leo Shelton, Jr. on December 21, 1945 after he returned from Germany at the end of World War II. Their first home was in Ft. Bragg, NC where their daughter Diane was born. After his discharge, from the U.S. Army in 1947, they returned to Wise County and later moved to Kingsport, TN. Leo’s work as an electrician took the family to Mineola, Long Island, NY where Leo worked on the Twin Towers in New York City and the World’s Fair. In 1985 they returned to Kingsport and built their home in Colonial Heights. They enjoyed their life of retirement very much.
Leo preceded Joyce in death in 1997, as did her daughter Diane in 2019, as well as her parents and brothers, Max, Bob, George, Keith, Roger and brother-in-law Charles Parker. Those left to cherish her memory are her grandson Patrick R. Neeb and wife Steffanee of Las Vegas, NV; son-in-law Randy Neeb; sister Vivian Parker; brother Dennis Gardner and wife Mamie; sisters-in-law Margie, Vonda, Teena, Barbara, June Shelton; and several nieces, nephews and many friends. The family expresses gratitude to the staff and caregivers from the memory care unit at Brookdale for their love and care of Joyce.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 4, 2020 from 1:00 to 2:00pm at East Lawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park. A celebration of Life Service will be held after the visitation with Reverend Bryan Moore officiating. Burial will be held in East Lawn Memorial Park in the Garden of Hope following the service.
Pallbearers will be Patrick Neeb, Randy Neeb, Dennis Gardner, John Gardner, Joe Gardner, and Brandon Parker.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Joyce’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2020 Meadowview Parkway, Ste. 100, Kingsport, TN 37660.
