Some say he was originally buried in Stone Fort Cemetery in what is now Giant City State Park. Most families moved their graves to nearby Evergreen Cemetery (at the Makanda church) when the park was formed. There are a few headstones left in the park cemetery, but not Jesse Elmore. He was either moved to Evergreen or was buried there all along. His wife is also buried there, but there do not appear to be stones for them at the church cemetery either.
