Lois Belle May Stevens left this earth on December 30, 2019 to join her husband, mother, father and only sister, Sue, and grandson, Ryan Edward. She was born in rural Cyril, Oklahoma on October 23, 1934 to Roy Lee May and Esther L. Stone May. Her dad worked in the oilfield and the family moved with him as he followed the work. They lived in several states including Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, Louisiana and Texas. In December of 1942 Lois Belle’s family moved to her grandfather Lee May’s farm northwest of Elgin and lived there for two years. Her dad built a house for them and moved it to the location behind what is now Williams Grocery in Elgin. The house stood in that very same location until it was sold and torn town for a NAPA store to be built there in 2011.
Lois Belle was a 1952 graduate of Elgin High School. She married Roy Edward Stevens on December 20, 1952 at the First Baptist Church in Elgin. To this union two daughters were born – Carolyn Sue on January 5, 1954 and Clara Jean on July 30, 1955.
Due to Roy’s job (his headquarters were in Huntsville, Alabama) the family moved many times during their marriage. They lived in Oklahoma, Alabama, North Dakota and several towns in Germany. They also were able to travel to Switzerland, Italy, England, Holland, Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, Canada and Mexico.
In 1978 Lois Belle and Roy moved back to Elgin and in 1985 Roy retired from Civil Service and they built a home right behind Lois Belle’s mother’s home so they could be near her and help her in her final years.
Lois Belle attended First Baptist Church in Elgin where in earlier years she taught Sunday school, WMU, worked in the nursery, was a Falls Creek sponsor and sang in the choir.
She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Burcham and husband Terry, Little, Axe, Oklahoma and Clara Goddard and husband Larry, Sterling, Oklahoma; grandchildren, April Burcham, Austin, Texas, Vincent Burcham and wife Chelsea, Macomb, Oklahoma and Katlin Goddard and wife Cara and their children, Lookeba, Oklahoma; great granddaughter, Daphnae, Macomb, Oklahoma; and several nieces, nephews and numerous friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children, 3800 N May Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73112
