In December 1945, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving during WWII and attaining the rank of Corporal. After his discharge, Gene returned to the Cobb community, in Caldwell County, where he was a lifelong farmer, raising tobacco, cattle, and hogs. He retired from the Kentucky State Penitentiary where he worked for over 20 years as a correctional officer. Gene was a member of Wallonia Baptist Church and enjoyed reading, fishing, and gardening.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Pearl Wallace McCormick; an infant son, Tommy McCormick; a granddaughter, Sherri Lynn McCormick; and one brother, Lawrence McCormick.
He is survived by two sons, John (Dianne) McCormick of Princeton, and Joe (Delinda) McCormick of Cadiz; one daughter, Kathy (Tony) Winfield of Hopkinsville; five grandchildren, Will (Ashton) Winfield, Tamara McCormick, Tiffany (Andrew) Webster, Dawn Taylor (fiancé, Kevin Martin), and Heather (William) Wood; seven great grandchildren, Creed Webster, Piercy Webster, WhitLee Webster, Teddy Taylor, Elizabeth Taylor, Alexis Wood, and Addison Wood; two brothers, Lewis McCormick of Wallonia, and Jerry McCormick of Cadiz; and one sister, Ruth Bridges of Cadiz.
Arrangements are being handled by Goodwin Funeral Home, Inc., 138 Main Street in Cadiz, where the family will receive friends after 4:00 PM on Tuesday, December 10, 2019. Funeral services will be at Goodwin Funeral Home at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, December 11, 2019, with the Reverend Kirk Greenfield officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Adams Cemetery in Trigg County.
