Jacob was born in Kentucky but later moved to Nebraska. He graduated from West Holt High School in Atkinson, Nebraska, in 1999 and attended Northeast Community College in Norfolk. He worked for the Atkinson Police Department, joining the Nebraska National Guard during this time. He began his basic training at Ft. Benning, Georgia, in October 2001. He had special training in the infantry and the airborne. He served in Afghanistan and then volunteered to go to Iraq and was deployed in September. He was married to his wife, Lisa, on November 4, 2002 in Norfolk. He was assigned to the Nebraska National Guard's 755th Chemical Company, based in O'Neill. Jacob was "calm, cool and collected" about everything and had dreamed of serving his country since he was a child. He was killed by a roadside bomb in Balad, Iraq. Jacob is survived by his wife, Lisa; children, Dylan, 4, Kirsten, 3, Bryce, 19 months; his parents, Rod and Patty Schmuecker of Atkinson; four brothers, three sisters and his grandparents, Ed and Gloria Schmuecker of Atkinson.
