Original postcard owned by DeeAnna dated May 18, 1879 from Sarah "Emma" L. (Meacham) Fields at Koszta, Iowa to her sister, Matilida Meacham, at Solon, Iowa:
Dear sister,
Can it be possible that Mother is dead and you have none written me about it? I hear indirectly fro (undecipherable) today that she died on Tuesday or Wednesday. No, oh no, it cannot be so, none of your would have treated me so There must be a mistake, yet I wait in suspense for two days. I thought you would surely telegraph me and I would go if I could at all. Nellie is well again, May God sustain you all, but our dear Father most of all, is my prayer. Your loving sister, Emma.
[Indeed, Emma's mother-actually stepmother, Fanny Averill Pratt Meacham had died on May 13, 1879. Emma was only about four years old when her natural mother, Lucinda Wasson Meacham, passed on. Therefore, she truly thought of Fanny as her mother.]
