Born Camillus Polydorus Maes at Kortrijk, he was a son of Johannes Maes and Justina Ghyoot. An account of his early career appeared in Rond den Heerd, vol. 19, no. 40, pp. 313-314 (October 5, 1884).
His remains were exhumed in late September 2019 from St Mary's Cemetery in Fort Mitchell and reinterred at their present location with funeral mass and entombment ceremonies on October 26, 2019.
