Helen Ruth Howard Willis, of Elgin, South Carolina, formerly of Charlotte, North Carolina, went to be with her Lord on Friday, December 27, 2019. She was 87 years old.
Born April 5, 1932, in High Point, North Carolina, Mrs. Willis was a daughter of the late James Dean Howard and Sue Emma Huskins Howard. She was a 1953 graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Willis served as a nurse at Mercy Hospital for 47 years, where she was Director of Surgical Services for a number of those years. She was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church and the Love Sunday School Class. Mrs. Willis was involved with Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) in Charlotte and Columbia. She enjoyed travel, bible study, spending time with her grandchildren and her beloved dog, “Sugar.”
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Willis was preceded in death by her infant son, Donald Shelton Willis, her husband, Charles Burgin Willis, her brother, J.D. Howard and her sister, Charlotte Sue Howard.
She is survived by her two daughters, Donna Willis Bohmfalk of Houston, Texas, and Sandra Willis Karlson and husband, Robert, of Elgin, South Carolina; and two grandchildren, Kaleigh Karlson Hegler and husband, Adam, of Columbia, South Carolina, and Sydney Karlson Martin and husband, Corey, of Aiken, South Carolina. She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Howard Brown of Albany, Georgia; her nieces, Brenda Brumit and Suzanne Brown Klein; and her nephews, Scott Howard, Dean Brown, Dean Howard and David Howard.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 6:00 until 8:00 pm Wednesday, January 1, 2020, at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road in Mint Hill. A funeral service will be held 11:00 am Thursday, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, 7200 E. WT Harris Boulevard in Charlotte, with the Reverend John Harrill and the Reverend Arnold Kessler officiating. Interment will follow in Charlotte Memorial Gardens.
