Ms. Nancy Sain Harwell (nee Beattie), 86, a longtime resident of Hickory, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at Embrace Hospice, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Nancy was born to parents Raymond Edward Beattie and Edna Caldwell Beattie on January 2, 1932. She grew up as the eldest of three children and attended Lincolnton High School. On February 5, 1949, she married James (Jim) Thomas Sain and the couple had four children. After Jim retired from Biltmore Dairy Farm, the couple became co-owners of Jim Sain Distributing Company. After Jim passed away in April of 1991, Nancy married Ray Herman Harwell on December 9, 1996. Ms. Harwell was a member of Westview United Methodist Church in Hickory, North Carolina. She was a prolific reader, enjoyed music of all types, and was a loyal Nascar fan. Her love of dogs, especially her dearly departed Pebbles, was well known by all who knew her. Nancy is survived by her sons, Ed Sain (Linda) of Newton, North Carolina, and Randy Sain (Alice) of Newhall, California, her daughters; Debbie Sain Bissette of Sunset Beach, North Carolina and Beth Sain Pethtal (Marvin) of Sunset Beach, North Carolina; her step-sons Bob Harwell (Shirley) of Lake Murray, South Carolina , and Gary Harwell (Kay) of Hickory, North Carolina; her sisters, Phyllis Beattie Hewitt of Mandeville, Louisiana, and Kay Beattie Justice (Fred) of Kernersville, North Carolina; eight grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Jim Sain and Ray Harwell; her parents Raymond and Edna Beattie. Private graveside service for the family will be held at 10:00 a. m. at Saint Paul Memorial Park, Newton, North Carolina. Services to celebrate her life will be held on December 3, 2018 at 1:00 p. m. at Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory, North Carolina with the Rev. Glenda Bramlet officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the caregivers at Summit Place, Little River, South Carolina and to the caregivers at Embrace Hospice, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
