Martha Janie Harris Greene, age 73 of Oxford, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, December 25, 2019 at Pruitt Health-Covington.

She was born in Oliver Springs, Tennessee on November 7, 1946 to the late Hubert Carl Harris and Hassie Rogers Harris.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband of 51 years Larry Kenneth Greene.

Mrs. Greene was a homemaker who daily prepared home-cooked meals. Some of her family’s favorites included fried pork chops, chicken and dumplings, and homemade lasagna.

She was involved with the school’s PTA and routinely helped her boys with homework. Mrs. Greene was active in her community volunteering for newspaper drives, 5K fundraisers, and Hightower Forest neighborhood workdays.

Mrs. Greene loved sports. As a young girl living with her family in North Carolina she would participate in clogging competitions. She would often assist her husband, Larry, in coaching basketball practices with her two boys. In fact, she broke her leg filling in during a basketball scrimmage. Even with a broken leg Mrs. Greene would still attend Newton County High School basketball games. In addition to basketball, she played in a women’s softball league and played tennis.

She loved the outdoors and enjoyed the many flower gardens around her home. She also enjoyed watching and attending NASCAR races, playing with her pet Dachshund, Cricket, and spending time with her two grandsons.

Survivors include her son Roger Kenneth (Susan Appleby) Greene, two grandsons Walker Kenneth and Coy Justin Greene all of Decatur, Georgia; son Michael Thomas Greene of Oxford, Georgia; and one sister Judy Harris Phillips (Larry) of Cashiers, North Carolina.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 4, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will immediately follow at the Rufus Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
