Jacquelyn Mozell Phillips, 75
Advocate, The (Baton Rouge, LA) - Sunday, February 19, 2006
After a lengthy illness, Jackie passed away peacefully early on the morning of Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, at home surrounded by family and close friends. During the past few days, even as she struggled for every breath, she was thankful that she had the opportunity to say goodbye to many of her friends and family, either by phone or in person. Jackie was born on July 7, 1930, in Seminole, Okla. She grew up in Louisiana and graduated from Moreauville High School. Jackie attended Louisiana College in Pineville and it was there she met the love of her life and husband of 54 years, Chester O. Burns. While Jackie and Chester never had children of their own, every niece, nephew and the children of their friends were treated as if they were their own children. They were affectionately known to all as "Aunt Jackie" or "AJ" and "Uncle Ches." These friendships and relationships developed over the years were cherished by Jackie. Jackie is survived by her husband, who was with her every minute of her last days, Chester O. Burns; her brother, N. LaRon Phillips of Baton Rouge and his wife, Lauren; nephew, U.S. Navy Lt. Barton LaRon Phillips, currently serving in Annapolis, Md., and his wife, Jessica; great-niece, Annslee; niece, Kathy Phillips Fry of Monroe; great-nephew, Corbin; niece, Kelly Phillips Johnson-Haskins of Tulsa, Okla.; great-niece, Lauren Johnson; sister-in-law, Sally White Phillips of Monroe; stepnephew, Sean A. Teague of Baton Rouge and his wife, Paige, and their daughter, Tatum; stepnephew, Travis D. Teague and wife Amy of Baton Rouge; stepniece, Ashley A. Teague of San Diego; along with Jackie's many close and dear friends. Jackie also leaves behind her loving and faithful friend, her little dachshund, Rusty. Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, Ira and Ina Phillips; father-in-law, Chester O. Burns Sr.; brother, Ira Phillips Jr.; sister-in-law, Lee Ann Phillips; and niece, Annslee Laura Phillips. A private family memorial service celebrating Jackie's life will be conducted Monday, Feb. 20, by the Rev. T.W. Terral, a Louisiana College classmate of Jackie and Chester's. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jackie's name may be made to the charity of your choice.
