Peckham came to St. Louis in 1859 & soon became a follower of Unionist Frank Blair. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Peckham joined the Union army & served as Lieutenant Colonel in the 11th Missouri Infantry & as Colonel of the 29th Missouri Infantry. Peckham's most important contribution was his publication of one of the fiest book-length accounts of the war in Missouri, General Nathaniel Lyon and Missouri in 1861, published in New York in 1866.
