Ruth Roberts' heritage was Romany Gypsy, with her family travelling around Kent, Sussex & beyond. Her father, Samson (1789-1843) reportedly took part in the Battle of Waterloo, but through research, he probably travelled to Menorca & took part in the Alexandra Expedtion of 1807. His discharge papers dated 24th March 1808 stated he was 18 years old & was with the 1st Battalion, 31st Regiment of Foot. He married Jane Sharwood on the 22nd September 1816 in Orleston, Kent. They had already had at least 3 children before their marriage. Samson was baptised in Stone, Kent 17th March 1811, Abraham 18th April 1813 Wittersham & Adam 4th January 1815 in Rye Sussex. Ruth was probably born c1817. She was baptised in Winchelsea, Sussex on the 7th February 1819. (In the attached news paper report it states that Ruth was the eldest child & Adam, born c1831 was the youngest brother). Further siblings of Ruth are Jane born c1819, Naomi baptised 17th Dec 1820 Winchelsea, Eve 9th February 1823 Iden, Emma c1825, Esan/Issac c1827 Hythe, Elias 3rd May 1829 Tenterden, Adam c1831 Hythe & Barbara c1833 Stanford.
On the 1st major English census taken in 1841 Ruth (aged 20) is listed living in Stade St, Hythe. Samson (50)her Father is a labourer, Mother Jane (50) & siblings; Jane 20, Naomi 15, Emma 15, Esan/Issac 14, Elias 12, Adam 10, and Barbara 8.

During this time Ruth spent her life working on the land.
The next census Ruth can be found on is 1871. She is living at Summer Hill, Sellinge with common law husband Joseph Hadlam/Hadlum. Head, aged 60, licenced hawker, born Ore, Sussex, Ruth R Hadlan Wife, 56, born Winchelsea.

1911 Ruth is a boarder, living with the Goldsack Family at 32 Peter St. Ruth Roberts, Widow, 98, born Denton.
In 1913 there were many reports of Ruth's 100th Birthday celebrations. Various reports state that her father, along with his 2 Sons, fought at Waterloo & that she was 1 of 22 children.
Along with a letter from the King, Ruth had a visit from The Archbishop of Canterbury, who was in the town to address a meeting of the Kent Diocesan Society & the Town Mayor, in full robes came to tea. After losing track of Adam, her younger brother for over 25 years, she was reunited with him. He travelled from his home in Sittingbourne to visit his sister & had a motor car at their disposal for the day. They travelled to Hythe & Bellwood, somewhere they hadn't been for over 50 years. Ruth was now living at 70 St John St.
On the 12th January 1917 Ruth passed away at 10 London St. Her age was given as 103. On the 16th she was buried after a service at St Michaels.
