On September 10, 1960, Hugh married Marlys Gruhn at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley. Following their marriage, Hugh worked for Brinkert Feed Mill for many years and then he worked for Group 21 in rural Sutherland. In 1969, Hugh took over the farm from his father and farmed until he was in his 70’s. Hugh also worked as a mail carrier for several years which he enjoyed very much. He also worked at several other jobs over the years as well.
He enjoyed being on the farm where he raised mules. He would hook them up to his buggy and participate in parades and used them for weddings. He was an active member in the church for many years and liked reading and watching Westerns. He enjoyed going to Casa Grande Arizona with his special friend, Ruth Ann for the last 10 years. Ruth Ann has been a special and bright addition to the family for over 10 years.
Hugh passed away on December 25, 2019, at the Community Memorial Health Center at the age of 80. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Marlys in 2003 and a brother, Jae.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Kathy Ver Steeg and her husband, Alan of Rock Valley, IA; a son, Mark and his wife, Allison of Waukee, IA; 2 grandchildren: Justin Matthews of Texas and Matt Kraft and his wife, Tracy of San Antonio, TX and their two children: Brynley and Annistyn; other relatives and many friends.
