James McCauley, 89, Kokomo, passed away at 11:00 am Thursday, December 23, 2019, at Waterford Place Health Campus in Kokomo. He was born June 30, 1930, in Howard County the son of the late Ernest & Hazel (Watkins) McCauley. On July 24, 1949, he married Carlis J. VerBryck who survives.

James was a 1948 graduate of Galveston High School. He served with the United States Army from 1952-1954. James then graduated from Indiana University in 1962 with a B.S. in Business Education and in 1966 he received his M.S. in Education. He received his Ph.D. in Business Administration from Western States University.

James worked in construction from 1948-1990, intermittently. He worked as a dept. manager for Montgomery Ward from 1958-1960. James was employed with Vincennes University as an Instructor of Marketing, Retailing, Management, Merchandising, Data Processing, Typing, Introduction to Business and Orientation from 1962-1965. While at Jeffersonville High School, he was Distributive Education Coordinator from 1965-1967. At Logansport High School he was Distributive Education Coordinator from 1967-1985, retiring in June of 1985. James also worked for Indiana Vocational Technical College in Logansport from 1987-1988, and established and operated Homestead Realty from 1980-1990. He enjoyed woodworking, crafts, and traveling.

James was a member and past president of the Logansport Breakfast Exchange Club, Life member of National Education Association, past president of Indiana Distributive Education Association. And past vice president of Indiana Vocational Association. He was also a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board in Logansport from 1977-1980, past president of Cass County Board of Realtors in 1985 and 1987, a member of Cass County Board of Realtors from 1979-1990, the Cass County Board of Realtors Board of Directors from 1985-1990, Indiana Association of Realtors Board of Directors from 1985-1990, Indiana Association of Realtors, and the National Association of Realtors. He was also Realtor of the year for Cass County Board of Realtors in 1987, Secretary for Cass County Board of Realtors in 1990, and a life member of I.U. Alumni Association.

Along with his wife Carlis, James is survived by his sisters, Debra Frye, and Dorothy Catt; sister-in-law, Diana McCauley; nieces and nephews, James Aucoin, Jeanie Williams, Linda McCauley, Max McCauley, Ralph Aucoin, Susie Castner, Bill McCauley, Brent McCauley, Greg McCauley, David Frye, Beth Ann Foraker, and Connie Clark; a host of step-nieces and nephews, Janis Mallot, Gary VerBryck, Greg VerBryck, Sharon Arnold, Roger VerBryck, Arlen Miller, Galen Miller, David Miller, Bob Miller, Allen VerBryck, Jeff VerBryck, Theresa Driker, Tisha Ward, Bradley Longfellow, and Howard F. VerBryck, along with several great-nieces and nephews.

James was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Marjorie (Clarence) Crocket, Bill (Mary) McCauley, Lola (Frenchie) Aucoin, and Dick McCauley; and brothers-in-law, Ronnie Frye, and Dave Catt.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, December 28, 2019, at Shiloh United Methodist Church, 5741 W. 100 N., Kokomo, with Pastor Michael Goodspeed officiating. Burial will follow in Galveston Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Army and the Kokomo VFW Military Rites Team. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 12-2 pm Saturday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made in James’ memory to DAV or Shiloh UMC.
