Originally served in the 2nd NJSM, 1861. Assistant Adjutant General of the Irish Brigade during the American Civil War. He was known as the Bard of The Irish Brigade, under his nom de plume Gallowglass for his published letters in the Irish American newspaper of New York.

Turner was choosen for this position by General Thomas Francis Meagher since this young attorney had previously published his letters of his experiences in the
2nd NJSM in local Jersey City newspapers.

Mustered into Co F, 88th NYVI as a Lt, Turner participated in every battle with the Irish Brigade, until he was severally wounded at Antietam in 1862. After several months he returned to the Brigade, and served up until he was killed in action at the Battle of the Wilderness. David Porter Conyngham's - "The Irish Brigade and It's Campaigns", the first Brigade regimental, was based on many of his Gallowglass's letters written in the Irish American newspaper during his service.
