Margie Gosa Shivers

Services for Margie Gosa Shivers of Lynwood, IL; will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Leak and Sons Funeral Home in Country Club Hills, IL.

Ms. Shivers, 71, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2018, at Franciscan Health in Dyer, IN.

Margie was educated in the Greenwood, MS; public school system. After graduating in 1965 from Broad Street High School, Margie matriculated at Mississippi Valley State University, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in elementary education in 1969.

She was a member of the band famously known as the “Mean Green Marching Machine” and participated in the Tournament of Roses Parade in 1965 and 1968.

She married her college sweetheart, Edward Cook, and to this union, one child was born.

Margie started her career in the Meridian public school system as an elementary school teacher. After teaching for several years, she relocated to Chicago and obtained a Master of Science in human service administration from Judah College of Chicago.

She was the executive director of Trinity Acres Housing Corporation until her retirement in 2016. She was a member of Trinity Acres United Church of Christ under the leadership of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Margie started her own publishing company, MGS Publishing, and self-published two novels, “Anonymity” and “Once is Never Enough.” “Anonymity” was listed as a “Bestseller,” garnering rave reviews.

Survivors include one son, Patrick Dewayne Cook Shivers (Shalon), and four grandchildren, Shayia, Devon, Chanteria and Patrick, Jr., all of Bourbonnais, IL; four sisters, Mary Streater (Robert) of Lynwood, IL; Barbara and Shirley Gosa of Greenwood, MS; and Loretta McNeal (Chester) of Meridian, MS; three brothers, Jesse Gosa (Joyce) of Lynwood, IL; Horace (Bonnie) of Greenwood, MS; and Mike McCaskill of Los Angeles, CA; two aunts, Georgia Tucker of Chicago, IL; and Agaphene (Bill) of Detroit, MI; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.




Rev. Mark Barclays will officiate at the services.
Burial will be in Mount Glenwood Memory Garden in Lynwood.
