Charles E. Gaines, 87, of Du Quoin, passed away at 1:10 A.M., Thursday, December 26, 2019 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.

Charles had been a laborer at Old Ben #26 coal mine at Sesser. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Du Quoin. Charles was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion. Charles was also a member of the UMWA.

He was born May 7, 1932 at Morehouse, MO, the son of Charles M. and Florence (McGehee) Gaines.

He married Nina Doris Hosick on December 10, 1955 at Springerton, IL and she survives.

He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin, five children - Doris and husband Cliff of Du Quoin, Debbie and husband Greg of Du Quoin, C Gaines, Jr. and wife M of Du Quoin, M Gaines and wife S of Tamaroa, and C Gaines and wife J of Du Quoin, two sisters - Wilma of Fairfield and E Gaines of Carmi, nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother - Chester Gaines and one sister - Doris Gaines.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, December 28, 2019 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Friends may call from 9 A.M. until the time of service on Saturday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion and the Army National Guard.

Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.
