Gene Franklin Davis passed away at home on Thanksgiving Day, after having just spent time with his family and leading them in a Thanksgiving prayer.

Gene was born on a farm near Krum, Texas, to Roy Davis and Nina Jenkins Davis. He loved working on the farm from a young age, and this is where he learned the importance of hard work and clean living. He always told stories of how he learned to drive a tractor at the age of 6, sitting on top of a bucket so that he could reach the steering wheel. His family moved from the farm to Wichita Falls, Texas, where he spent much of his younger years, again helping with farm work. In 1955, his family moved to Vernon, Texas, due to his father’s employment. He attended 1st Baptist Church of Vernon, where at age 16 he accepted the Lord as his Savior. Gene worked many jobs during his high school years, but his most memorable were; working in the butcher shop at a local grocery store (this is why to this day he still doesn’t like to eat chicken), and working at a local gas station (where he developed a great passion for auto mechanics). He graduated from Vernon High School in 1956, and soon after, he met the love of his life, Pat Crawford, at a local drive-in where she worked as a carhop. They dated for one year before marrying on June 1, 1957. Soon after marrying, the young couple moved to Irving, Texas, and Gene gained employment at American Motors Corporation, where he would grow in his love for cars. Gene would continue his work at AMC for 30 years and retired at the age of 49. After the birth of four daughters, Gene longed to get out of the city and raise his girls in the country, surrounded by animals. He bought some acreage in Southlake, Texas, and promptly began to fill the land with every sort of farm animal he could acquire. The family joined Carroll Road Baptist Church, and Gene was happy to help at the church in any way possible, from teaching children’s classes, to working on the building committee when the new church was built. It was a joy for him to see his girls being “trained in the way they should go”, Proverbs 22:6. After his girls had grown, Gene and Pat moved to Weatherford, Texas, where they joined North Side Baptist Church. It wasn’t long before they became active members, enjoying their Sunday School class and small groups. Gene’s favorite ministry was being a door greeter for the children’s department. It was a joy for him to greet the families with small children as they arrived every Sunday, and to this day he still remembers many of those children, even though they are grown. In recent years, Gene and Pat have been blessed by the homebound ministry of North Side and have faithfully listened to the radio broadcast each week.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Nina Davis.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Pat Davis, his four daughters, Renee (Ernest) DeLaRosa, Sherry (Stephen) Bezner, Michelle (Rick) Sparks, and Andrea Sherman; ten grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sisters, Kathy (Ray) Goodwin, and Connie (Fred) Street; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A celebration of Gene’s life will be held on Wednesday, December 4th, at 11 a.m., at North Side Baptist Church, 910 N. Main Street, Weatherford, Texas. A luncheon will be held at the church immediately following the service.
