David Franklin Ratliff, 77 years of age of Grundy, VA went home to be with the Lord while his family remained by his side on Monday, December 23, 2019 in Holston Valley Hospital.

David was the son of the late Glen and Garnet Ratliff. David was a member of the Poplar Creek Church of Christ for fifty-three years and served as Deacon for more than forty years. He loved the Lord and always kept his faith and trust in God. David served as a member of the Buchanan County Board of Supervisor. He was a positive person; always gleaned every ounce of blessing of life and gave the Lord credit for all the blessings. His response, to how are you doing or feeling today was always “Great” never complaining. His explanation to Great was that he served a Great God and appreciated all the blessing he received.

David was a 1961 graduate of Grundy High School. He furthered his education by completing a Mining Technology Degree from Southwest Virginia Community College. He loved to go hunting and fishing with his nephews, brothers and friends. He would travel to Oregon to Elk hunt with his friend John Schuler whom he met in the Army during his two year stint in the military. John has a son Scott and Scott had a best friend Alex Rimely. The trio and David had fun Elk hunting in Oregon and made many lasting memories that he always cherished. They stayed friends for the rest of David’s life. Each year during the Christmas season, a phone call was made to catch up on the events of the past year. This year Pat placed a call to John and Alex to let them know how seriously ill David’s condition was. Each spoke to David on the phone this year for the final time. Alex who lives in McLean, Virginia was able to visit with David in person.

Survivors include his wife Pat of fifty-five years and their daughter Kimberly Ratliff Main of Fort Smith, Arkansas. Two grandchildren: Madison Kathleen and Mason David and his son in-law Dr. Bert Glenn Main also his brother Johnny Paul Ratliff. He loved and valued his family. On the day of his surgery, the surgeon said he talked about his family and the love for his family. That is when the surgeon asked him how long have you been married and he replied, “Not Long Enough”. He is also survived by his loving nieces and nephews whom he loved as his own.

His only daughter, Kimberly, was always the highlight of his life. He loved her and his grandchildren and son in-law beyond words of expression. They were so closely connected. Madison has much of her granddads’ personality and values. Kimberly always made his life so complete.

Active pallbearers will be his nephews, Dr. Jeffery, Reid, Tim and Robert Ratliff, Mike McCurdy, Tom and Steve Stiltner, John Clevinger, David Delaney, Lisa Delaney Rife and Ricky Rife. Honorary pallbearers will be Elders and Deacons of the Poplar Creek Church of Christ and men of the church and Charles Ratliff.

In addition to his parents, Glen and Garnet Ratliff, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Nancy Ramey and Janie Sliger, and brothers Glen Deek and Jerry Ratliff.

The funeral service will be Friday, December 27, at Poplar Creek Church of Christ. The family will receive friends at 6 PM with the funeral service at 7 PM with Masonic Rites.
December 28 at 12 PM burial will follow at Mountain Valley Cemetery, Big Rock, VA with military rites.

The family would like to extend thanks to Grundy Funeral Home for taking care of their loved one, and to the Poplar Creek Church of Christ members, preacher Jim Ed Belcher, Jessie Foster and to the many who loved, supported and assisted David. Daniel Winiger the chaplain at Holston Valley Hospital, and Jill his wife who visited David once or twice daily and prayed beautiful and meaningful prayers bonding with their faith in our Lord.
