Ernie's was a son of Samuel Deighton Swainson (1851-1936) & Emily Jane Freeman (1871-1946). He had also been a partner of the widow Louisa Freeman (1854–1889), Emily's sister & had 3 children. Louisa died 24 May 1889 when she fell from a horse, 1 day after giving birth to a son, George William Swainson (1889-1958). His father then married Emily in 1890. They had 12 children (4 of them born prior to their marriage).

Ernie was a member of the East Coast Mounted Rifles. In 1917 he embarked for WWI as Private 51197 with the 26th Reinforcements, F. Company, NZEF. His next of kin was his mother Emily Swainson, at Te Karaka, Gisborne.

He married Georgina Mary Powell in 1920 & had 3 children. In 1925 he was a labourer at Te Karaka
