One of the most notable literary figures of his generation, he was the editor of the literary journal Reedy's Mirror. He began his writing career at the Missouri Republican and later worked for the Globe-Democrat where he wrote a weekly column called "Sunday in Forest Park." He founded the St. Louis Mirror in 1893. He was highly regarded for his efforts to give young unknown writers a voice. Among his discoveries were poet Sara Teasdale, playwright Zoe Akins & short-story writer Fannie Hurst.
