Captain Elisha Jenkins Harding was the son of Elisha and Amy (Jenkins) Harding. He was born in Wyoming County, Pennsylvania, in 1828. Harding made his way to the west coast to join the California gold rush in 1849. The move from Pennsylvania to California proved pivotal; shortly after Harding's migration to California, he transplanted to Salem, Oregon, where he assumed a notable career in politics, real estate, and served in the Indian War of 1856 and the Civil War. He married fellow pioneer Sarah "Eleanor" Purdy, daughter of Aaron and Belinda (Bucklew) Purdy, June 19, 1857 in Marion County, Oregon, and together Harding and Purdy raised seven children:
