His first assignment as Parochial Vicar was at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart, Washington, DC. In 1979 he served as Parochial Vicar at Saint James, Miami, Florida to be witl1 his ailing parents. He was assigned as Parochial Vicar in 1980 to Saint Camillus, Silver Spring, Maryland and in 1983 to Our Lady of Lourdes, Betl1esda, Maryland. He served anotl1er year in Miami, Florida in 1984 at Saint Hugh. In 1985 he was appointed Parochial Vicar to Saint Peter, Olney, Maryland and in 1986 to Saint Ca tl1erine Laboure, Wheaton, Maryland. In 1989, he was appointed Executive Director of the Archdiocesan Hispanic Catholic Center. In 1990, he was appointed Pastor of Saint Joseph, Pomfret, Maryland, in 1994, Pastor of Saint Mark, Hyattsville, Maryland and in 2000, Pastor of Saint Mary, Clinton. In 2003, Fatl1er Alvarez retired because of ill healtl1and took up residence in Miami, Florida.
Father Alvarez served on tl1e Council of Priests and as Dean. He was a member of the Priest Retirement Board and served as a Chaplain to the Knights of Columbus.
The Wake for Father Alvarez will be held on Tues day, December 3, 2019 a t 9:30 a.m. a t St. Hugh's Church, 3460 Roya l Road, Coconut Grove, Florida 33133. The Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Cemetery, 11411 NW 251" St., Doral, Florida.
