The Life Story of William Westrope, 71

William T. (Wootz) Westrope was born the son of Mary and Jack Westrope in Shelby Co., Ia.

He married Lotus Reynolds at Harlan Ia. They lived at Willard, Mont., from 1912 to 1929 before moving to California.

He died July 17, 1967, in a Chula Vista hospital in California after a long illness at the age of 71 years old.

He was preceded in death by two sons Jackie and William T. who were both killed in turf accidents.

He is survived by his wife, daughter Mrs. Charlotte Wiedeman, two sisters; Mrs. G. R. Slates of Hermit, Calif., and Mrs. M. A. Bailey of Hot Springs and three brothers—Tom of Hot Springs, Frank of California and Fred of Baker, Mont., and five grandchildren.

Funeral service were held July 20, 1967, with burial in Glen Abbey Memorial Park, Chula Vista, Calif.

William Westrope grew up on a Iowa farm. He had a early love of horses and became a professional horse trainer. His two sons became professional jockeys and unfortunately both died doing what they did best. Taylor William 'Wootsie' died in a accident at Caliente, Feb. 27, 1932. Jack Gordon 'Rope' died riding 'Well Away' in the 1958 Hollywood Oaks. 'Rope' was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1965
William served several years as a Patrol Judge at Caliente Race Track.
