Darlene Dumas-Elerby-lngram was born August 15,1927 to Mrs.
Arvella McNair and Clay Dumas Sr. in Fordyce, Arkansas. her Mother Mrs. Arvella
McNair-Dumas-Twine preceded her in death. Arvella's 2nd husband J.C. Twine
preceded her in death. Darlene's grandparents - James and Mollie McNair
preceded her in death. One brother, Clay Dumas Jr. and One sister Charlotte
Jean Johnson preceded her in death. Husband-Augustus Elerby and Husband-
Clarence Ingram preceded her in death.
She leaves to mourn her passing: Her Nephew Mr. James Johnson and his
daughter Nicole Johnson. Niece's - Ms. Eva Marcia Freeman, Ms. Marshia
Dumas & Niki Carolyn. Three Children: Anthony Dumas (Star Hines-Dumas),
Sharon Dumas-Garner and Tyrone P. Dumas (Ceciel). Grandchildren: Danielle
S. Dumas-Akobundu (Chima), MauriceA. Dumas (Lena), Sabrina Garner, Courtney
Garner (Chrystal), Ashlee Dumas, Emerald & Dreanna Moore-Garner. Great-
Grandchildren: Chazz Dorsey, Camri Fifer, Thai' Dumas Watts, Courtney Jr.,
Carrington, Adrianna, Elena
A host of McNair-Brazil- Scott-Cowan-Mathews-Beckley-Agee-Harrell family
members, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Darlene loved her family and
attend every MBS-family reunion possible over a 35+ year period.
Darlene came to Milwaukee in 1945 from Fordyce, Arkansas and initially stayed
with her AuntlUncie Jasper & Dollie Mathews until she got her 1st job as the 1st
African American hired to work at General Merchandise and is was history for her
from that point on.
Darlene was given her start in business by Mr. Oscar J. Plotkin. She was a successful
business owner in Milwaukee beginning in the late 1950's with the Brown Jug
Tavern & Restaurant on 8th & Center Street. Darlene's Lounge in the early-mid
1960's at 3160 N. Teutonia Ave. The Charcoal House Restaurant at 24th & Walnut!
Lisbon up until 1970.The Charcoal House on N. Green Bay Ave in the early 1970's.
She also worked for Pabst Brewery before they closed their Milwaukee plant.
Darlene was very involved in the community, politics, and other African American
businesses. She had many personal friends as tavern/restaurantlbarowners. She
was a NAACP/Urban League member. Darlene was invited to the inauguration of
President Lyndon B. Johnson.
