NEWKIRK, Frances Langford

98, passed away on November 16, 2016. Frances was born in Arcadia, FL, on February 28, 1918 to Corley and Estelle Langford. While a young child, her family moved to Tampa where she, her brother Jack and sister Gayle attended Tampa schools. Looking for a more rural life style, the Langfords moved their family from Tampa to Brandon, where Frances graduated from Brandon High School. She went to Tampa Business University, then went to work at the Merchant Association. Frances met future husband Billy Newkirk at Riverside Baptist Church. They were married in 1940. Their life was centered around their church, their family and their friends. They were charter members of Riverside where they invested much of their lives. This facility is now Idlewild Baptist Church, Central. Years later, Riverside started a mission church in north Tampa that became Carrollwood Baptist Church, where Frances and Billy became active members for the rest of their lives. They were married for 59 years until Billy's death in 1999. Frances was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Their sons were Tom Newkirk (Carole) and Jack Newkirk (Nancy). Frances had four grandchildren, Scott Newkirk, Mark Newkirk, Christi Newkirk Zettel (John) and Janel Newkirk Hutchinson (Keith); and she had six great-grandchildren, Parker and Jack Newkirk, Caitlin and Courtney Zettel, and Lexi and Adam Hutchinson. In addition, Frances is survived by her nieces and a nephew, Lynn McDaniel (David), Ray Renfro (Lois), and Michael Engel (Chuck). For the last fifteen years, Frances has called University Village Retirement Center home, where she was active on several committees, including the Friendship Committee welcoming all new residents with her usual enthusiasm. She was loved by all and will be missed by many. Services will be held at Carrollwood Baptist Church, 5395 Ehrlich Road on Saturday, November 19, with visitation at 10 am and a memorial service following at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, Frances requested that gifts be made to the Carrollwood Baptist Church in her memory.
