•Sex: M
•Birth: 12 JAN 1803 in Tn
•Burial: Denning Cemetery, Harrison, Arkansas
•Occupation: Farmer & Justice of the Peace
•Death: 20 JAN 1872 in Crooked Creek, Boone Co., Arkansas
•Note:
Joel D. Mitchell was taken when a child to Tennessee, and was therereared and married. He removed from the latter State to
Missouri, and came to Arkansas about 1834, settling in Carroll County, where he remained until his death in February, 1872. He served as
justice of the peace for one or more terms. His wife died in 1844.
Note:
Joel is found on the tax records of White County, TN for the years 1824 and 1825. At that time he was married and living on the land in Captain Mallory's Company. He and his first wife, Elvira Dibrell had 1/2 acre on Calf Killer Creek.
After their marriage, Joel and Elvira lived in TN for a while, but by 1827 had moved to Marion County, TN. However during the 1830's this family found its way to Carroll County, Arkansas. It has been proven that Joel and his brother William left Tennessee sometime after February of 1833. One of William's sons was born in Missouri in December of that same year, however a definite date for their arrival in Carroll County has not been established. Joel first appears on the tax rolls of Carroll County in 1836.
Joel owned the northwest one-quarter of Section 3 Township 18 North, which contained 40 acres in Crooked Creek and Jefferson Townships. It is said that Joel and his brother owned the land that is now the site of the Harrison, AR City Hall.
Joel was elected Justice of the Peace several times by the people who lived in his township. These elections took place in 1836, 1838 and 1845.
Elvira Dibrell died September 18, 1844 the day after Obediah was born. She is presumed to be buried next to Joel in an unmarked grave in Denning Cemetery.
Sometime between 1844 and 1848 Joel was untied in marriage with a young neighbor girl, Deborah Hood.
