Bishop John Kain was appointed by Archbishop Peter Kenrick as his co-adjutor in 1893. Two years later, with Kenrick's health in question, Kain was appointed the Second Archbishop of St. Louis, MO. His title was that of Archbishop of Marcianapolis.
