Gary Roger Matson died peacefully at his home on Friday, December 20, 2019, in Kingwood, TX, after a 14-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 67 when he entered the eternal rest of his professed Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Born on March 6, 1952, in Marquette, Michigan, to parents emigrated from Finland, Gary grew up on a farm, a first-generation American, filled with a strong work ethic and devotion to family. After graduation from Marquette High School in 1970, he received an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He graduated in 1975 and served with honor in the U. S. Air Force, flying in the KC-135 and T-43 aircraft, until separating in December 1983 with the rank of Captain. During Gary’s time in military service, he met the love of his life, Patricia Hightower, whom he married on October 9, 1976, in Kansas City, MO.
Gary worked in commercial aviation until 2017, including 33 years as a pilot for Southwest Airlines, most of it based in Houston, Texas. He settled in Kingwood and raised his family there with great pride. Never one to sit still, he enjoyed a variety of activities including competitive tennis and golf, snow skiing and water skiing, playing the accordion, and supporting his family in their pursuits. In recent years, he enjoyed summers at his Upper Peninsula retreat, a cabin on Little Shag Lake near Gwinn, Michigan, that had been in his family for generations.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Hightower Matson, his three daughters: Janel Matson Kates and husband, Jason Kates, Lisa Matson, and Melissa Matson; his sister, Lucille Montes and husband, Dr. David Montes; as well as his four grandchildren: Jonah, Joanna, and Joy Kates, and Adriana Williams. He was predeceased by his parents, Jennie and Vilho Matson.
A memorial service will be Thursday, January 2, 2020, at 10:00 am at Second Baptist Church – North Campus, 22770 US 59, Kingwood, TX 77399, followed by a reception.
A military funeral will be Friday, February 28, 2020, at 11:00 am at the Community Center Chapel on the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, CO 80840.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests donations in memory of Gary Matson to the Marquette Tennis Association, 131 East College, Marquette, MI 49855.
